Campus Card Workshop12th/13th October 2010 For the last 10 years, Smartex has delivered its highly successful workshops for smart card technology and applications, with over 250 delegates to date. These workshops have been completely independent of any supplier, and have provided unbiased and objective educational sessions of a highly informative and practical nature, led by acknowledged industry specialists. Smartex has now extended its range of workshops with a series specifically for the UK Higher Education sector, as a response to a growing demand from its Higher Education Smart Card Association (HESCA) members and others. The January 2010 Workshop was attended by 11 HEI delegates, and comments made afterwards included: "I very much enjoyed attending the Workshop and found it to be very informative and beneficial. I now have a much clearer understanding of the opportunities and issues surrounding smart cards and you have probably prevented me from wasting a considerable amount of time and money" "Thanks for a very enjoyable as well as informative two days. I have left with lots of needed information, and probably more importantly a much clearer perspective and set of ideas of how our smart project should progress" "Thank you for a very informative two days and a lovely dinner on Tuesday night". With so many universities considering the introduction of complex smart campus card schemes, Smartex has established regular one-day (spread over two half-days – lunchtime to lunchtime) residential workshops in Cambridge, whose main purpose are to provide delegates with an in-depth understanding of smart card technology and the ways by which it can be used effectively to support multiple functions on a typical university campus. As examples, smart campus card schemes can: - Replace all existing tokens and fobs with a single, multi-application smart card
- Support increasingly important attendance monitoring systems, including biometrics
- Support modern and effective physical and logical access control systems
- Reduce or eliminate cash handling and associated costs by introducing e-payments
- Reduce fraud, error and administrative overheads, by automation and enhanced security
- Support an ID assurance programme and prevent identity abuse
- Offer enhanced student and staff convenience
- Provide a long-term platform for the introduction of new automated functions.
The agenda for the workshop will include the following sessions: - A case study of a successful campus card scheme
- The fundamentals of smart card technology appropriate to HEIs
- A survey of the 20+ functions and applications on campus for which smart cards should be used
- Building a supportable business case for using smart cards on campus
- Dealing with the supplier minefield
- A practical guide to the implementation of a smart campus card scheme
For further detail on the course agenda, please click here. The above sessions are led by specialists in each of the subject areas covered. Full supporting presentation material will be provided to all workshop delegates. The workshops are particularly relevant for university officers who will be directly involved in the planning and implementation processes for a smart campus card scheme, for those whose work will be affected by the introduction of this technology, and for suppliers of related products and services who wish to gain a clearer understanding of the marketplace and its requirements. The delegate price for the workshop is extremely good value, at £450 + VAT, and this includes attendance, course material, one night’s accommodation, lunch on both days, and dinner on night one. As an additional bonus, and at no extra cost, a specialist will be available throughout the afternoon of the second day, for the conduct of pre-booked private meetings with individual delegates, in order to address any specific questions that they may have relating to their own HEIs. If you or your colleagues would benefit from attendance at the next workshop, taking palce on 12th/13th October in Cambridge, please contact Richard Poynder at Richard@smartex.com or 01440 712610.
